Isobel Harbison

I am an Irish art critic, historian and lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London. I write about art, film, literature and technology, and more broadly about how images are made, how they travel, and what impact they have on us. I contribute articles, essays and interviews to a range of art, film and culture magazines, a selection of which are included here. I have given talks at institutions including The National Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the Hayward Gallery, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and I have lectured in various faculties including at the Royal Academy, The Royal College of Art, Central St Martins and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. In 2014, I was awarded the Fellowship in Arts Journalism at the UK’s Arts Foundation and completed my doctoral studies at Goldsmiths, where I was an AHRC doctoral scholar.

My first book was published by the MIT Press in 2019 (Performing Image) and I am currently working on my second book about women, night, light and power. In 2023, it was shortlisted for the Eccles Centre and Hay Festival Writer’s Award, 2024.
